I am Angela Hooks, blogging as angchronicles, about what I enjoy: organizing my life based on faith for balance and strength for my mind, body, heart, and soul. “Off the Hooks” began in April 2018. My goal was to post a blog every other week, which has remained consistent. So far, I’ve posted seven essays, eight counting the welcome. Here’s a quick review:
- A Week of Unknowing Rest
- A Mother’s Day Reflection: From a Mom Who Didn’t Want Children
- The Accidental Black History Lesson in My College Writing Class
- Ever Wonder What a Black Christ Would Look Like on Screen?
- The Conference Paper
- I am Who I am Part I and Part 2
I’m relearning balance after five years of school— converting an MA to an MFA and earning a PH.D.—therefore, I didn’t want to over-commit and disappoint myself. My relearning requires resharpening my saw and moving away from old habits to new habits like not over-committing my time or putting more on my plate than I can eat, I mean to handle. I’m balancing overeating as well.

Another new habit is complete restfulness suggested in Anne D. LeClaire’s book Listening Below the Noise: The Transformative Power of Silence. Here are some challenges, I’m working on:
- When a task is completed sit in a restful awareness for several minutes before running to the next chore, place or thing on your list.
- After a phone conversation, sit quietly for a minute or two. Breathe.
- Take a long walk without earbuds.
- Proclaim one day a month or one morning without speaking.
Almost-Daily Mini Saw Sharpeners
What I didn’t expect was to post almost-daily quotes, inspirational messages and or challenges. Let’s call them mini Saw Sharpeners. I’m reading and writing and cooking for the summer months; thus, my creative mind is bubbling with pleasure, reflection, and the need for silence. (I’ll talk about silence in the July 4th post.) One thing I don’t want to happen with “Off the Hooks,” is the mantra of me, me, me that’s why several Saw Sharpeners are directly from God’s Word, the Bible. The Bible is my source of strength and balance. God has recycled and transformed me, repeatedly. And all I can say is I’m impressed with His work.
I’m having fun, blogging as a hobby. I hope the inspirations and challenges are fun, daring and make you think “now that’s off the hooks.” They are all of that and more for me. I’m appreciative of your comments, thumbs ups, and claps.
Check out Off the Hooks FB Page
Of course, I’ve created an FB page for Off the Hooks, so if you get a chance check it out and give it a thumbs up, share it with your FB friends.
I am a planner who worries a little bit, but not enough for worrying to overtake my goals or become an addiction. I love planning and the ability to have flexibility with my plans. With that said, in a few months, “Off the Hooks” will generate a newsletter. If you’re in my address book, contact list or social media friend the newsletter will find its way to your inbox. I will not feel slighted if you unsubscribe. Oh, speaking of subscribing, you can subscribe to “Off the Hooks” by clicking here . Once you’ve subscribed bi-weekly blog post and the monthly newsletter will come right to your inbox. I’ll also send you an “Off the Hooks” magnet or a coaster (still in the deciding mode).
Thank you for reading,
